It was a strange day yesterday when through some unusual circumstances, I joined the world of the freelancer, its been an interesting day so I thought I’d give an honest account, I’m sure others have been or will be at this stage over the next few days.
Its not exactly what most freelance guides suggest,
- Have a client base ready
- Save up enough money to live for 3 months
- Investigate the market
Sometimes circumstances mean that you have to think on your feet and work with what you’ve got.
For instance
- We are moving into a new house at the end of the month
- Theres a certain conference happening in less than a month (and another one after that)
- I’d outsourced quite a bit of stuff over the last few weeks that isn’t bringing in much at the moment
It was going to be a very interesting month
I sat in the pub yesterday and wrote a list of what I have to do, gave each thing a priority and categorized them, worked out a few details with my accountant and had an early night.
Today I woke up about 7ish, I`ll be honest I didn’t want to but it was going to be a hell of a day.
First on the list, work on the Hodgetastic site, the agreement with the previous company was that I did no freelance SEO, now its time to write and add some things that I can well…. do.
First up…….SEO, I think there is a nice market for an unbiased report with no upsell for link building or other services. I’m toying with other things I package up “Hire a Hodge” for a day
Now that was done its time to, well tell people.. I posted a tweet (that was retweeted by some very nice people) and contacted a few of the freelancers I know that were online at that moment that if they wanted to do a client swap (if I get any dev / design work, I’d pass it on if they did the same with any SEO work)
I had a couple of leads in a couple of hours and was feeling pretty good but there was still plenty to do.
ThinkVisibility needed the schedule released and some accounts sorted, so ticked that off the list.
I always joke about the domains I buy so it was time to do something with some of them, working with Heather for most of the day on two of the sites, whilst following up on potential interest in working together.
What can I say, freelancing is an intresting step, it might work out fine but it might not saying anytthing differnt at this point would be lying, I’m going to try the best I can and with the support of friends, family and twitter followers, give it a bloody good go.
