January 5th, 2009

I’ve been looking into starting a company properly, but theres just so many things to think about and ways to do it, I asked twitter if they have any links to share, I’ve been quite quite a few so why not share them;

Thanks to richquick, NTceline, iphigenie, leewillis77, Miss_Thrifty, Receptional, cazm, Stubbs, djgraham, peterc, rishil. prawlings and imran__ali for the links and advice.

Do you have any more resources I can add?

    When I was starting SettleUp, the best business bank was HSBC, they had 18 months of free business banking, and as long as all your transactions are done online, they remain free after that 18 months too.

    The Professional Contractors Group is useful if you are a contractor or consultant:

    I forgot to add, if you join the Federation of Small Business (www.fsb.org.uk) which is about £100 a year, you get loads of benefits like free busniness banking (for life) from the Co-Op, free legal advice and other stuff. Well worth looking into. Plus they also hold local networking events where you can pimp your services ;-)

    My accountant wrote a post on my blog on starting a company – it was back in 2006, but it still could be useful: http://www.nakedtranslations.com/en/2006/03/000611.php

    By company I assume you mean a ltd? My advice would be only do it if a) you’re earning a shed load of money (excess of £50K) because the tax avoidance (woops!) tax optimisation is better or you’ve liabilities to protect yourself against.

    Otherwise its a right old paper intensive, red tape wrapped pain in the a$$.

    The Chambers of Commerce have been good to us. Fortunately we are based in Merseyside so we are benefiting from the reduced training costs provided. Not sure if this applies to all Chambers, but if available you can apply for courses/certifications and they will cover 50% of the costs.

    The other advice I can give you is to get out there to networking events. You can spend alot of your budget on marketing, which is necessary, however self marketing in person is a no brainer.

    Good luck, wish you the best.

    Most people tend to forget about the legal aspects when starting a company. However, the legal side of things is the most important consideration of all. Get this part wrong, and you could wind-up in all sorts of legal dramas down the track! For instance… you should always have each of your prospective partners and/or associates sign a buy-out agreement. Why? Because if at anytime he or she decides to quit the business then your “company” will have first option to buy back any stock or shares which they may hold. A buy-out agreement provides you with legal protection, and puts control of your company back in your hands.
