High Street Companies That Should Die!

December 29th, 2008

PCWorld – I’m sick of the way that the sales guys constantly lie to people who don’t know better to get the sale, everytime I go in (and I try not to go in very often) I see sales people upselling things like extra memory because vista won’t handle 2gig or external hard drives (because things can go wrong)… its not bad that they upsell… its just they way they do it, agressiveness and bullshit.. and add onto the fact that the markup’s on PCWorld’s items are huge, they are better off going to dabs. (and If you do know what your talking about and try and by something from there, make sure you don’t go to the leeds one and get a snotty cow who used the phrase “I work at PCWorld so I know a lot more that you“… classic!)

CEX - Another computer store but these guys are just plain rip off merchants… I was in there today, a bloke traded 2 dvd box sets… 8 quid exchange or a fiver cash!!! and the worst bit was…. he did it!, £50 retail of dvd’s and he sold it for a fiver, its the same with games.. they will pay you a fiver for a game and sell it at full (and sometimes over) retail price.., I bought a hard drive from them this morning (I was desperate) and got home, it had a clicking sound.. went back to the shop and queued for an hour… AN HOUR to return it, the queue was full of people with there prized game collections exchanging them for a pitiful amount of cash.. back to the hard drive, when I got to the desk and explained the problem he said, oh yeah, we knew it was clicking but it seemed okay.. ARGH!

Primark - I have no idea why I hate this company, but I really do

Oxfam - okay maybe die is a bit harsh for this shop, but seriously, your a charity shop, ACT LIKE IT… CD’s for a tenner… don’t think so matey, books for £1 off retail price…pish!… and don’t even get me started on those dedicated oxfam book shops which arn’t really oxfam but companies using the name and donating some profits… sneaky…sneaky

I agree with you about PC World, but Primark…. where do you think us poor student types get our clothes? :D

I’d like to see Phones4U going belly up too, their customer service sucks big time! Then there’s Peacocks (similar to Primark), don’t get me wrong, they have great socks in their store, but everything else looks like cheapo market stock…. some of it even looks second hand ffs… I would never buy any jumper or coat from them, ever…

Peacocks is a “seconds and damaged stock” store. So expect a lot of their stuff to be crap.

Having spent a couple of hours wandering round the sales today I would be quite happy for them all to close!

Starbucks. Because their coffee tastes rubbish and they’re trying to kill off my favourite independent coffehouse down in Brighton (the wonderful Red Roaster).

Every Tanning salon, and pound shop anywhere ever.

I hear USC have now gone as well – naked chavs here we come ….

Not Primark as great quality & prices, (bras are ace). It is exactly what M&S used to be back in the 60/70′s!

Too many card shops and not enough variety of stock. Will WHSmith be one to depart as has overpriced stationery stock etc.

Our Market town has seven Charity Shops and most ‘specialise’. Oxfam is brill for good quality coats and a retired bookseller deals with the book stock so quality items only displayed. Barnados has the shelves of penny dreadfulls.

The Royal Mail for putting junk mail through my letterbox; and for making me jump through hoops to try and find out if a recorded letter ever got delivered. I’m still waiting three months on.

  8. David Coveney says:

I’ve worked for Oxfam on a couple of occassions during my PeopleSoft consulting days, and that included work on their Shop Accounting System. And I can tell you that pure charity shops make almost zero money. Many are legacy shops – gifted in wills or by other benefactors – perhaps the balance of leases with ten years to run… that kind of thing. With thanks to the volunteers and only one paid manager per area they can make a profit once other costs such as heating and rates are taken into account.

    Just.

If they made stuff cheaper they’d have to shut down. The Widnes shop has recently gone anyway, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot more disappeared in coming years.

The bulk of money and income for Oxfam comes from their trading arm (Fair Trade goods), donations, legacy donations, and being surprisingly businesslike about the process of running a charity.

But I agree with you about CEX – but if they closed then where else could chavs sell their relatives’ PSP games?

  9. anon says:

If you saw how many Porsches and Ferraris were parked outside Oxfam’s UK HQ you would have a seizure.

  10. Elaine says:

Ikea – once you’re in you can’t get out – you have to go all round and through every aisle to reach the exit – it’s a full blown expedition – hate the bloody place – think they’re modelled on Boots top floor in Leeds – I can never find the down escalator or stairs.
