Mac OSX Day One – Switching From Windows?

February 4th, 2009

So today I decided to use OSX for the full day, I wasn’t doing anything intensive or writing any documents but I had a lot of emails and signing off to do, a perfect day to get to know the OS. You know they say that when you get a Mac and everything just feels….right? Well thats a load of bollocks!

Today has been one of the most frustrating times in hodge computer history, everything felt WRONG… WRONG WRONG WRONG, sure it looked pretty with the bouncing icons and the genie effect… BUT I WANT TO RIGHT FECKING CLICK!

  • What happened to the Delete key? the hash key? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT UNDER THE ESCAPE KEY?
  • Why carn’t I open a folder using the enter key?
  • Why is safari so shite?
  • Why do I have to go to the top of the screen to do “file and close”
  • How the heck do I access my computer on the network! \\bighodge\ ??!?!?

I think we can pretty much say that whilst I have a mac, at heart

    Right, it’s all very simple…

“BUT I WANT TO RIGHT FECKING CLICK!”

Have you set-up your mouse pad for right-clicking? System Preferences > Trackpad.

“What happened to the Delete key?”

Backspace… what’s the difference, apologies for ignorance.

    “the hash key?”

    Alt+3 – I use it all the time mate…

“WHAT THE HELL IS THAT UNDER THE ESCAPE KEY?”

Right, no I’m with you there.

“Why carn’t I open a folder using the enter key?”

    I concur…

    “Why is safari so shite?”

I like it but it’s not as if IE7 is that cracking either. Firefox.

“Why do I have to go to the top of the screen to do “file and close””

Er, you don’t. Keyboard shortcuts mate.

“How the heck do I access my computer on the network! \\bighodge\ ??!?!?”

Is it a PC network? Assuming yes (big hodge? Who you kidding?)…

System Preferences > Advances > WINS > Set the workgroup name (big *cough* hodge).

I was you once – well, I wasn’t but go with me on this one – and thought OS X was a bit daft. Then you start to realise that the problem is you’re so used to the Windows way of doing things, that you’ve lost some common sense… and then when you “get it”, everything makes sense, you find things quicker and, frankly, life’s a much more fulfilling place.

Anytime you’re stuck – shout me!

    > Why carn’t I open a folder using the enter key?

    ⌘↓ (Cmd-down)

    > Why do I have to go to the top of the screen to do “file and close”

⌘W (Cmd-W) or ⌘Q (Cmd-Q) depending on if you want to close the window or quit the app. Or right-click it in the dock and select quit.

    > How the heck do I access my computer on the network! \\bighodge\

    Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> “smb://bighodge/”
    or
    ⌘K (cmd-K) -> “smb://bighodge/”

I’d forgotten that – thanks Caius!

    Thanks Ross + Caius

and Ross Backspace deletes backwards, delete deletes forwards… :)

  5. Ross says:

    Fair point your Hodgeness…

Suppose I’m ore of a delete backwards kind of guy then.

Or – go wild – Shift-> (highlight the thing to the right), then backspace.

    :-)

    Haha, i love the sticker!

When i first used OSX, my previous OS of choice was Linux. Safe to say, within the first day the whole tag line of “everything works” made perfect sense.

    >> Why carn’t I open a folder using the enter key?

    You can… with QuickSilver. :)

  7. Caius says:

Oh sorry, forgot to answer the forward-delete question (backspace == delete in my world!)

Fn-delete. (Or Fn-backspace in your world I guess.)

Fn is the bottom-left key on the macbook’s keyboard.

  8. Dominic Hodgson says:

Would that be the one marked fn? ;)

  9. Ross says:

    Caius – you de man…

    Never knew that either.

Yours, hanging up his “Mac Genius” t-shirt forever,

Sympathies Dom. I used an Apple II before I was confronted with a PC at work back in the early 80’s and the frustration of being an Apple soul at heart and then working in PC environments was a source of irritation for 2 decades. I only used computers for mundane Secretarial/Business stuff at work but because my background is design/creativity the ‘anorak’ side of the PC OS was always a stumbling block.

My (lazy) attitude is I don’t particularly want to know what makes it work I just want it to work intuitively, hence my continued delight in the stream of Apple products since those early Mac classic days. It feels right if the product is an elegant design and thus a joy to use.

    Oh & I don’t do virus problems either…..

Once you get used to not using windows, you will become accustomed to the mac way! If you get used to exclusively using OSX, going back to windows will feel like using a computer without any fingers – bloody disabling!

Stop being such a whinger and adapt ;p

  12. huihiuo says:

Download VMWare Fusion and create a virtual machine running XP. Keep it fullscreen in a space on the desktop then you can switch between XP/OSX easily.

This is how I do Visual Studio development on my mac without using Mono. It’s a shame mono develop is so craaaaap.

  13. JImms says:

I don’t think the transition to Mac will ever be that instant. It certainly wasn’t for me. Give it time. But still, OS X isn’t for everyone, despite what some people might think!

  14. Andrew Mason says:

When I switched to the Mac a few years back it took my a while also. Quicksilver is awesome and I would be lost without it. I use it to launch every app as well as go to my main data folders.

Learn to use the keyboard shortcuts as they save you so much time. There is a great dashboard widget called xCuts that shows you all the shortcuts nicely on your dashboard.

Persevere as in three months you will wonder how you ever got anything done on Windows!

  15. Adam Wells says:

Id like to learn use a mac but i am scared i dont know their special codes for doing basic functions like ‘⌘↓’.

    has it dead on.

  16. Zath says:

I tried using a friend’s MacBook for an evening and can echo your frustrations with it – took me ages to do anything and just didn’t get along with the OS generally – didn’t really even like the look of the OS unfortunately.

If I ended up with a Mac for whatever reason, I’d have to be getting Windows installed pretty sharpish to actually get any work other than graphics/video done.

That said, I’m sure they suit a lot of people’s taste too.

  17. GrayApple says:

There’s always a learning curve with switching an operating system, Imagine us Macheads trying to use Windows after avoiding it for months on end?

“AHH FUCK, WHY ARE YOU FREEZING!?”

    :)

to be fair, ubuntu even confuses me.
