So does anyone actually like the new facebook layout?

March 21st, 2009

Facebook seem to be getting a lot of backlash with the re-re-redesign of the homepage in an almost “we wanna be like twitter move”, I’ve been invited to at least 5 groups saying they HATE it, there’s an application with over 900,000 votes saying bring the old one back (compared to 60,000 saying.. YEY!).

Facebook and Google have always done pretty well with bucket testing (we will forgive Google for Search Wiki) but this one just seems to have been published without actually asking anybody.

I`ll be honest, facebook isn’t a website I go on everyday so the change doesn’t really affect me but the uproar certainly caught my attention.

Almost every redesign has a certain group shouting “bring back the old one”, people tend to hate change and get used to things as they are, theme tunes are the same, I remember when they changed the casualty theme tune, I hated it, what a load of crap…. now I cannot remember what the old one is like and quite like it :)

I have to say on the most part like it, but its now difficult to get into the groups pages from the ‘home’ view – sadly something I need multiple times a day until May!

I also noticed this evening that they rolled out a new feature that I didn’t like – automatically liking everything with an ‘unlike’ button that didn’t format very well..

It changed? Shows how much I use it when I can’t actually tell you what’s different heh.

Have always thought Facebook too fussy and cludgey to use and haven’t really taken much part in it so the recent changes arn’t radical enough to tempt me to use it more. I was really pleased to join up to Twitter.

Not being a mobile internet user and frustrated by my mobile & home phone keypads for texting (been typing for too many decades & have ‘wonky’ thumb joints) the ease of one click to open Twitter and pass comment really suits me & my limited online network, plus the random messages a la Fry/QI/Magazine Monitor to inform & amuse.

Have also noted a shift to Twitter by some avid Facebook users more in my generation due to the immediacy of reading communications. A local BBC Radio presenter friend now uses Twitter both off &’ on air’. Reckons Twitter scores over Facebook & especially Text as people don’t have to remember Texting number if signed up to Twitter + ‘free’, also easy to read tweets on studio screen as character limited!

I quite like the new Facebook look and feel, though I still feel its to cluttered. The biggest problem comes from the fact the “news feed” is not live, so if you want to see the latest bits then a quick refresh is needed no biggie but I liked the old live view (which you can still get on the iphone app)

But by far the biggest complaint is facebook is incapable of keeping time, with some of my status updates claiming to have been written at 3am! (like I’m ever up at 3am) or morning updates at 19:30. At first I thought it was timezone issue but todays statuses are shown correct time its only after the 24 hour mark do they suddenly change. I mean how hard is it to store unixtimestamps?

Change almost always brings a host of complaints – but I actually think this is a bit of an improvement. The only real mistake I think they’ve made is to bring in two quite noticeable changes in quick succession. Its a little unsettling to say the least, and makes me think they’re floundering a bit.

Previously when Facebook changed their layout around.. I was one of the few who actually liked it, and eventually most of the complainers did get used to it because it was more practical. It was more organized, streamlined and was an improvement over the cluttered older layout. Well now, they’ve gone right back to being a cluttered mess. That is why the new layout sucks; not because it’s different, but because it’s a total mess!
