Spotify on the iPhone theory

July 27th, 2009

So the recent announcement about Spotify on the iPhone got me thinking inbetween naps this morning (I’m quite ill at the moment and no its not swine flu), Did spotify inform Apple before submitting the app or is it just a giantic ballsy move on the part of the company?.

If its a ballsy move then fair play to them, I think any other company would bow instantly to the negative press and user reaction if the app was denied but Apple are something of a different beast, a very loyal fanbase and an almost can do no wrong attitude amongst them, they’ve already made it clear that apps will be denied if they infringe on any of the core functionaility of the iPhone / Apples core business.

But wait, Music isn’t apples core business, I’ve read several times in the past few years how iTunes doesn’t actually make Apple that much money because of the licences and bandwidth, they just use it as a tool to sell more iPods / iPhones.

A couple of months ago Spotify announced an android app and we havn’t seen it since, everyones allowed a crackpot theory when it comes to stuff like this so heres mine.

Apple will allow the iPhone app to be released under three conditions

  • There are strict limitations on the playlist syncing
  • The iPhone app buy functionailty goes through iTunes instead of 7Digital
  • The app is an exclusive app for 6 months

The new nokia has been advertised on spotify for bloody ages with its “free music downloads” infact its been advertised so much that I cannot remember the model number of it. I think its obvious that the advertising model isn’t working at the moment, the constant lack of inventory, voicemails and constant subscription messages show spotify is cracking under the pressure, the iPhone app could change all that.

I think that it’s also going to encourage a lot of on-the-fence people who haven’t upgraded to premium yet: Spotify have provided no real incentive aside from just not hearing some adverts.

I agree – the need to be a premium user may may lead to a bump in revenue for Spotify if it catches on.

Also the app will allow storage of tunes for offline listening.. interesting.
